Lawson becomes program’s first first-year pitcher to earn the award multiple times
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia softball first-year pitcher Mads Lawson was named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. Lawson became the program's first back-to-back Pitcher of the Week recipient and the first first-year player to earn the award multiple times in the same season.
The Rancho Murieta, Calif, native was nearly flawless in two starts against Yale over the Weekend. She went 2-0 with a pair of complete-game shutouts against the Bulldogs. In 14.0 innings pitched, she scattered four hits, with a walk, two hit batters, while striking out 14.
She became the first pitcher in Columbia history to throw three consecutive shutouts and has now allowed a run to score in 20.2 innings pitched.
Lawson opened the week with a 3-hit complete game shutout against the Bulldogs in the series opener on Saturday. After running into trouble in the top of the first, Lawson stranded runners in scoring position and then retired nine in a row from the first to the fourth inning.
She finished off the day going 7.0 complete, scattering three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
In the rubber match against the Bulldogs, Lawson was even better. She took a perfect game into the fifth and lost her no-hit bid in the seventh when she allowed a leadoff single. She struck out six against Yale in the finale, giving her 99 for the year, which is tied for eighth-most in a single season in Columbia history.
"Mads has been incredibly solid and consistent for us on the mound," head coach Jennier Teague said. "Beyond her performance, she's an outstanding teammate, and her leadership from the circle has been a big addition for our group this year. We're really happy to see her success and proud of what she continues to do for our team."
For the year, she is 9-6 with a 2.44 ERA. In 103.1 innings pitched, she has struck out 99 while holding opponents to a .218 average. Her 99 strikeouts are the 62nd most in the nation, ninth most by a first-year pitcher. She is also among the Nation's leaders in complete games with 13 and shutouts with four.
Columbia returns to action on Saturday when they begin a six-game road trip, starting with a three-game series at Cornell. Game one between the Lions and Big Red is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
