First-year pitcher becomes program’s second National player of the week recipient
NEW YORK – Columbia softball first-year starting pitcher Mads Lawson has been named the D1 Softball Mid-Major Freshman of the Week, as announced by D1 Softball on Tuesday afternoon.
Lawson becomes the program's second National Player of the Week recipient, and first since Madison Gott was named NFCA National Player of the Week on March 20, 2018.
Lawson was named to her second consecutive Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday. She went 2-0 with a pair of complete-game shutouts last weekend in the Lions series victory over Yale.
For the weekend, the Rancho Murieta, Calif., native was nearly flawless in her two starts, scattering four hits, a walk, and two hit batters, while striking out 14. Lawson is the first pitcher in program history to throw three consecutive complete-game shutouts and has not allowed a run in 20.2 innings.
After tossing a 3-hit shutout in the series opener against the Bulldogs, Lawson was somehow even better in Sunday's rubber match. She took a perfect game into the fifth inning and lost her no-hit bid in the top of the seventh. She finished the day facing just three batters over the minimum, with a walk, a hit batter and six strikeouts.
For the year, she is 9-6 with a 2.44 ERA. In 103.1 innings pitched, she has struck out 99 while holding opponents to a .218 average. Her 99 strikeouts are the 62nd most in the nation, ninth most by a first-year pitcher. She is also among the Nation's leaders in complete games with 13 and shutouts with four.
Columbia returns to action on Saturday when they begin a six-game road trip, starting with a three-game series at Cornell. Game one between the Lions and Big Red is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
