Sarah Mikami and Tatum Hubble hit clutch home runs in support of Mads Lawson
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia softball team scored in four different innings as the offense provided plenty of support for starter Mads Lawson as the Lions defeated Cornell 7-1 on Friday at Niemand-Robison Softball Field.
Columbia (16-17, 8-5 Ivy) finished the day with seven runs on nine hits. The big hits were provided by Sarah Mikami and Tatum Hubble, who both smashed home runs, and Kyra Mason, who smoked an RBI triple in support of Lawson (10-6), who went the distance despite not having her best stuff.
The Lions struck immediately in the first. Caylene Nguyen singled with one out and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After advancing again on another wild pitch, Nguyen scored on a third wild pitch to give Columbia a 1-0 lead despite recording just one hit in the frame.
Columbia added to the lead in the second after creating traffic again. The Lions manufactured a run with limited contact, capitalizing on a free pass issued to Hubble, who moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Mikami and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
Cornell (17-19, 7-9 Ivy) threatened in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the third, Taris Frans led off with a single into shallow center. She moved over to third on the double from Laurent Holt. With runners on second and third with no outs, Lasson buckled down, stranding the runners to keep the Lions out front 2-0.
Columbia finally broke through again in the fifth. A leadoff baserunner set the tone before the Lions converted the opportunity with a run-scoring sequence to make it 3-0. Columbia continued to pressure the Cornell pitching staff, putting runners aboard and forcing deep counts.
The Lions added on in the fifth when Mikami smashed a ball the opposite way. The home run was her fourth of the year and 16th of her career. She is now tied with Maria Pagane (2018-12) for seventh all-time with 16 career home runs. She is two shy of tying Maggie Johnson (2008-11) for sixth all-time.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cornell scored on a sacrifice fly from Sofia Hernandez. The run ended Lawson's consecutive scoreless innings at 26.1 innings.
In the seventh, Columbia added three more on the 3-run home run from Hubble, which was her second of the year.
The loss went to Madalyn Covelli (5-10), who could not get out of the second inning.
The series resumes with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one of the twin-billing is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. first pitch. The nightcap will start a half hour after the competition of game one.
