Chan scores first goal of the season in non-conference finale

NEWARK, Del. — Columbia women's soccer took a second-half lead and generated a season-high 21 shots Sunday afternoon, but Delaware rallied for two goals over the final 27 minutes to hand the Lions a 2-1 loss at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Lions (1-5-3) controlled much of the pressure in a scoreless opening half, recording seven shots and five corner kicks. Gabby Chan put Columbia's first shot on goal in the 12th minute before Aoife Turner and Lyla Geller each forced saves from Delaware goalkeeper Sophia Hall later in the half.

Columbia came out firing after the break and broke through in the 51st minute. After Maia Beltran and Alexa Lee each put early attempts on goal, Chan banked in a shot off the crossbar from long distance, giving the Lions a 1-0 advantage with her first goal of the season.

Delaware (5-2-3) responded in the 64th minute when Adiat Olaogun-Dickson scored to even the match at 1-1. Columbia continued to create chances, including another shot on goal from Chan in the 70th minute, but the Blue Hens took their first lead when Ava Agresti scored off an assist from Gabby Riley in the 80th minute.

The Lions finished with a 21-11 advantage in shots and put nine attempts on goal compared to five for Delaware. Hall made eight saves for the Blue Hens. Chan led Columbia with seven shots, including three on goal, to go along with her second-half score.

Columbia turns its attention to Ivy League play, which begins on Saturday with a matchup against Brown in Rhode Island. Kickoff is at noon.
