EASTON, PA. ? Chris Hunter pitched six shutout innings of relief, and Ron Williams extended his hitting streak to 11 games, but Columbia (12-22-1) fell at Lafayette (22-12) 2-1 in a pitchers' duel.
Williams, Jake Summerhays and Henry Perkins each had two hits for the Lions, while Hunter allowed only four hits in those six innings of work.
Dan Bajger started the game on the mound for Columbia, allowing two hits and two runs, both unearned, in two innings.
In the bottom of the second, the Leopards scored two runs on two hits and one costly error to take a 2-0 lead.
Columbia responded in the top of the third, as Thomas Stevens singled center field. Williams followed with a single to the pitcher, putting runners on first and second and no outs. Andrew Ward hit into a double play, but Stevens advanced to third with two men down. Summerhays then singled to left field, driving home Stevens to make it a 3-1 ball game.
The Lions would threaten in the top of the eighth, when Summerhays singled to left field with one out. Next, Mike Malfettone singled, putting runners on first and second. Kyle Roberts entered the game as a pinch runner for Summerhays, but the Lions could not muster another run.
Ron Williams is now leading the club with a .368 batting average, 53 hits, a.479 slugging percentage and a .392 on-base percentage. He is also tied with the team lead with 30 RBI and has a team-best 11 game hitting streak. Williams also had a 10-game streak to start the season.
The Lions will host Cornell for two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22 at Andy Coakley Field. First pitch for each twin bill is scheduled for noon. The baseball homecoming will also begin at noon this Saturday.
