BOCA RATON, FLA. – Despite seven different players recording a hit, the Columbia softball team (2-3) fell to Michigan State, 7-2, in the final game of the FAU Invitational on Sunday.
The Lions came out of the gate swinging as Kerry Cook opened the game with a base hit back up the middle. With the help of a sac bunt to move Cook into scoring position and a pair of walks to load the bases, rookie Jordan Townsend was able to send a two-out, two-RBI single into the left-center gap to put Columbia in the lead, 2-0.
The Spartans responded back in the bottom half of the frame, however, posting up a pair of runs on two hits and a Columbia error to knot the game up, 2-2.
Unfortunately with the help of two more runs in the second and three more in the fourth, Michigan State was able to jump ahead to a 7-2 lead heading into the fifth.
While the Lions were able to scatter six more hits throughout the game, they were unable to manufacture another run as the Spartans held on to claim a 7-2 victory.
Tessa Kroll (1-2) took the loss after only one inning of work, allowing two earned runs on a pair of hits, while Tonia Wu came in to throw five innings of relief, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out a pair.
The Lions will return to action next weekend as they head to Washington, D.C., to compete in the District Invite on March 4-6, where they will face George Washington, Robert Morris, Maryland and Georgetown.
