The Lions came out swinging right out of the gates on Friday afternoon as Kerry Cook and Reilly Metzger teamed up for back-to-back singles to open the game. After a walk to Alexandra Yule, the Lions were able to get on the board thanks to a sac fly by Maddie Gott and a passed ball to give Columbia the early 2-0 advantage.
After two quick outs to open the bottom half of the frame, the Colonials began to rally back with the help of a walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball before a two-RBI double knotted the game up at 2-2 heading into the second.
Unfortunately GW continued to attack in the bottom of the second as they added four more runs thanks to a three-run shot by Megan Linn and a RBI triple by Carlee Gray before Kayla Maloney could come in and strike out the next two batters to hold the Colonials' lead at 6-2.
Columbia answered back in the top of the third, however, as Metzger opened up the inning with a base hit to center. After a stolen base and a fly ball to put Metzger at third, Shelby Unger was able to drive a ball through the left side to cut the GW lead to 6-3.
After sitting the Lions down in order to open the fourth, the Colonials answered back with a RBI double down the right-field line by Monica Macchiarulo to put GW back on top, 7-3.
Looking to respond in the top of the fifth, Kerry Cook was able to open the inning with a double to left but despite a single to center by Yule, the Colonials were able to snag Cook at the plate trying to score, keeping the GW lead at 7-3.
With George Washington still leading, 7-3, after five and a half innings of play, the umpires decided to suspend the game due to darkness before the teams could return to action on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately the Colonials came out attacking after finishing a big win over Maryland just moments before as they picked up two more runs on a two-run home run to right-center to give George Washington a 9-3 lead heading into the seventh.
After a quick out, Reilly Metzger was able to blast a full-count triple down the right-field line and Maddie Gott was able to drive her in, but the Lions were unable to complete the comeback as GW sealed a 9-4 victory.
The Lions combined for 10 hits in the two-day affair, with Metzger leading the way after going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Gott finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI while Shelby Unger went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Tonia Wu (2-2) took the loss after 2.1 innings of work, allowing six runs on only three hits while Kayla Maloney pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four.
The Lions will return to action on Sunday, March 6, as they round out the District Invite against Maryland and Georgetown.
