GAME ONE RECAP: No. 10/12 Georgia 10, Columbia 1 (5 inn.)
The nationally-ranked Bulldogs came out swinging early, putting up three runs in the opening inning with the help of a two-run home run by Alyssa DiCarlo to give Georgia a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
With the help of a leadoff walk, an infield single and a Columbia throwing error, the Bulldogs were able to put across another run in the top of the second to extend their lead to 4-0.
While Taylor Troutt was able to pick up a flare single in the bottom of the second to put a hit on the board for the Lions, the Bulldogs responded with five more runs over the next two innings to take a 9-0 lead.
After Tonia Wu was able to get out of the top of the fourth with a strikeout, Troutt was able to get Columbia on the board in the bottom half of the frame as she blasted a solo home run over the left-center fence to cut the Georgia lead to 9-1.
Unfortunately the Bulldogs were able to plate another run in the top of the fifth while holding the Lions hitless the rest of the way to seal a 10-1, five-inning victory.
Kylie Bass (5-0) earned the win for the Bulldogs after throwing a complete game, allowing only one run on three hits while striking out three. Kayla Maloney (0-1) took the loss after 2.0 innings of work, allowing five earned runs on four hits while Tonia Wu pitched three innings of relief, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five in three innings of work.
Taylor Troutt led the Lions after going 2-for-2 with a home run while Alexandra Yule picked up the only other hit for the Lions.
GAME TWO RECAP: Charleston Southern 8, Columbia 1
Columbia wasted no time attacking in the second game of the day as last week's Ivy League Rookie of the Week, Reilly Metzger, sent a one-out triple into the right-center gap in the top of the first. Unfortunately the Bucs were able to shut things down from there, getting a pair of outs to strand Metzger at third and end the inning.
Charleston Southern used that momentum in the bottom half of the frame, posting up five runs on five hits to take an early 5-0 advantage.
Still trailing in the top of the third, Kerry Cook was able to spark things up as she beat out a one-out infield single before Reilly Metzger could blast another ball into the gap, scoring Cook from first on the RBI double to put Columbia on the board, 5-1, heading into the bottom of the third.
Unfortunately the Lions were unable to manufacture another run from there as the Bucs went on to plate three more runs and seal an 8-1 victory.
Arizona Pilgrim (3-4) earned the win after five innings of work, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out one. Tessa Kroll (1-4) took the loss after only one third of an inning of work, giving up five runs on four hits.
Tonia Wu pitched 5.2 innings of relief for the Lions, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out a pair. Reilly Metzger led the Lions' offense after going 2-for-4 with a RBI, a double and a triple.
The Lions will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they head across the bridge to Charleston to take on Charleston Southern once again at 3 p.m.
