WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the help of a six-run third inning, the Columbia softball team (2-4) combined for 10 hits on Saturday morning as the Lions took down Robert Morris, 9-1, in a five-inning game at the District Invite.
Tonia Wu (2-1) threw all five innings for the Lions, allowing only three hits while giving up only one unearned run on the day and struck out four batters.
After Wu was able to sit down the Colonials in order to open the game, the Lions were able to take advantage of a hit batter before Alexandra Yule could send a full-count pitch into left for a base hit to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Facing her eighth pitch of the at-bat, Maddie Gott was able to battle and drive a fly ball into left, scoring Reilly Metzger to put Columbia on the board first, 1-0.
Robert Morris answered back in the top of the second, however, with a one-out double into left before an illegal pitch and a passed ball allowed the Colonials to tie the game up at 1-1.
Columbia wouldn't rest there though as Taylor Trout led things off with a base hit into right before later scoring on a sac fly by Maura Lynch to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
While Robert Morris was able to pick up another hit in the top of the third, it was all Columbia from there as the Lions rallied in the bottom of the third with six runs on six hits, including a leadoff double by Metzger, and a RMU error to take an 8-1 lead.
Still holding on to an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Shelby Unger and Taylor Troutt were able to team up for back-to-back one-out singles before a wild pitch later in the inning allowed Unger to cross the plate and extend the Lions lead out to eight.
From there, Wu did exactly what she needed to do as she stepped up and sat the Colonials down in order with the help of back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and hand the Lions a 9-1 victory.
Troutt finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI while Shelby Unger went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Reilly Metzger ended the day 2-for-2 with a RBI and a pair of runs scored. Maddie Gott led the Lions with three RBI after going 1-for-2 while also scoring a run.
The Lions will finish the halted game with George Washington later this afternoon around 3:30 p.m. as they pick up in the bottom of the sixth with the Colonials leading, 7-3.
