WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Columbia softball team (3-6) rounded out the 2016 District Invite after a tough battle with Maryland and Georgetown on Sunday afternoon.
GAME ONE RECAP: Maryland 5, Columbia 4
As she has done the majority of the season, Kerry Cook opened the game with a base hit but the Lions were unable to manufacture a run in the opening inning while the Terps put across a pair on two hits to take a 2-0 lead after one.
After another run by Maryland in the bottom of the second, the Lions were able to respond in the top of the third with three-consecutive one-out singles before scoring on a passed ball and a one-out, two-RBI double into right by Taylor Troutt to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the third.
Both team continued to battle from there on defensively until the top of the sixth when Troutt was able to lead off the top of the sixth inning with a solo blast to put Columbia up, 4-3, heading into the last two innings of work.
After stranding the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Terps were able to put across another run in the bottom of the seventh with the help of a pair of two-out base hits, a passed ball and a Columbia error to go on and take a 5-4 victory.
Troutt finished the game hitting 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk while Maddie Gott picked up the other RBI for the Lions after going 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Tonia Wu (2-3) took the loss after 1.1 innings of work, allowing only one earned run while striking out one. Kayla Maloney went 5.1 innings while allowing only five hits and three earned runs while striking out three.
GAME TWO RECAP: Georgetown 16, Columbia 1 (5 Inn.)
Georgetown came out in the early goings on Sunday afternoon, posting up 13 runs in the first inning while holding the Lions to only four hits over the course of the five innings of play before taking a 16-1 victory.
Reilly Metzger was able to pick up a one-out single into left center in the opening inning, but the Hoyas were able to get out of the jam before posting up 13 runs in the next frame to take their lead.
Trailing 14-0 in the top of the fourth, the Lions were able to get things going as Taylor Troutt hit a one-out infield single to put two on before Bonnie Schipper could walk the bases loaded with two outs on four-straight pitches. With the bases juiced, Tonia Wu was able to blast a base hit into right, scoring a run to put the Lions on the board before the Hoyas would go on and seal a 16-1 victory.
Wu (2-4) took the loss after only two thirds of an inning of work, giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits while Maura Lynch gave up two runs on four hits while striking out one.
Reilly Metzger went 1-for-1 with a walk while Tonia Wu picked up the team's lone RBI after going 1-for-2.
