NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team was impressive in a pair of tournaments this Sunday, when the Lions competed in both the Black Knight Invite at Army, and the New York State Championships in Ithaca.
A pair of first-year's took home individual titles in
Matt Kazimir and
Mike Kelly, while senior
Dan Reed also came out victorious on the day.
In the 133-pound bracket at the Black Knight Invite, it only took a pair of wins for Kazimir to hoist a title. The first-year squeaked by Army's Matthew Marino, 3-2, after a reversal in the second period tied the match, and an escape in the third was the difference maker. After he moved on to the finals with a disqualification in the semis, Kazimir tacked on a riding time point in the third over Yoshito Funakoshi from Cal-Poly to preserve a 6-5 victory.
At the same tournament, Reed won his first two matches at 157 over Luke Weiland (Army) and Brawley Lamer (Cal-Poly) to move on to the finals. Against Lock Haven's Alex Klucker, Reed posted four takedowns to aid a 12-3 major decision in the finals.
Columbia also had a pair of second place performers at Army in
Riley Jacops and
Michael Bulkin. At 149 pounds, Jacops posted a major decision over Bloomsburg's Alex Carida and an overtime win against Noah Hanau from Army, before a loss in the finals to Buffalo's Jason Esteves, 5-3. For Bulkin, a 6-3 win over Parker McClellan of Lock Haven and a 6-2 victory against JT Brown from Army set up a finals bout against Alex Hopkins from Army, which he dropped, 4-2.
Also coming away with top performances at Army were
Laurence Kosoy taking third at 165,
Danny Fongaro finishing fourth at 141,
Joe Manchio taking fifth at 125, matching the place of
Max Elling at 165.
At the New York State Championships, Kelly dominated his way through the 125-pound bracket to take home the title. After bonus point wins over Chris Dean of RIT and Framingdale's Marc Traficante, Kelly got by Ryan Chauvin of USMAPS, 9-3. In the semifinals against Greg Quinn from Niagara, the first-year posted a first period pin in 1:11, before an amazing 15-second pin of Logan Ninos from Ithaca in the finals.
In the 197-pound bracket,
Sam Wustefeld put up a first period pin and a major decision en route to a second place finish, while
Sam Webster finished third at 149 with two pins on the day.
The Lions are back in action next Sunday, November 25th at Lock Haven's Mat Town Open.
