VESTAL, N.Y.—Columbia senior
Dan Reed earned an automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a sixth place finish in the 157-pound weight class during the final day of competition at the 2019 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships Saturday at Binghamton Events Center.
Reed led six Lions to EIWA podium appearances as first-year
Joe Manchio placed fifth in the 125-pound weight class, junior
Laurence Kosoy finished in seventh place at 165 pounds and three Lions finished in eighth place in their respective classes including senior
Max Elling (174), sophomore
Brian Bonino (184) and sophomore
Daniel Herman (heavyweight). All six wrestlers were in action on Saturday.
"Ultimately our goal was to have 10 wrestlers on the podium," Columbia's Andrew F. Barth Head Coach
Zach Tanelli said. "We fell short of our goal, but having six guys place at this tournament is huge. We have a lot of wrestlers returning next year and the program has a bright future. We are happy for Dan to qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships and we have a few guys that can potentially get NCAA wild cards.
Matt Kazimir and
Laurence Kosoy both have a chance, along with
Joe Manchio."
"I'm proud of these guys and this team. All season long they battled. Unfortunately, some of our wrestler's seasons ended, but we are excited about our upcoming performance in the NCAA Championship in a few weeks."
Reed entered Saturday's final day as one of eight wrestlers still competing for the six NCAA spots at 157 pounds. He needed to register a win in his first bout to clinch an NCAA berth and he delivered with a convincing 5-1 victory over Navy's Quentin Hovis. Reed then advanced in the consolation bracket and dropped a tight 2-0 decision to Army's Lucas Weiland. Reed will represent the EIWA at NCAAs in Pittsburgh from March 21-23. He is 27-8 on the year.
Manchio's fifth place finish is impressive for a first-year as he entered the weekend as the No. 10 seed at 125 pounds. The top four wrestlers at 125 pounds advance to NCAAs. He advanced to the consolation semis with a 5-3 win over Binghamton's Audey Ashkar in Saturday's first bout, then dropped a 10-5 decision to Penn's Carmen Ferrante in the semis. In the Fifth Place Match, Manchio took care of Army's Trey Chalifoux with a 9-6 victory to claim fifth place.
Kosoy finished seventh at 165 pounds after dropping a 7-4 decision to Brown's Jon Viruet in Saturday's first bout. He defeated Cornell's Andrew Berresyesa in the Seventh Place Match to earn a podium trip.
Columbia entered the EIWA Championships with one of the youngest teams in the field. The Lions' lineup featured seven total wrestlers and five first-years who were competing in their first-ever EIWA Championship event.
It was a successful weekend for the Lions as Columbia's Andrew F. Barth Head Coach
Zach Tanelli saw nine of his 10 wrestlers win at least one match apiece, while three advanced in championship play with first round victories. All six Columbia wrestlers that were still in action on Saturday advanced through the consolation bracket with at least two victories apiece.
In the team competition, Columbia finished in 11
th place with 43.5 points.
Founded in 1904, the EIWA is the oldest and largest wrestling conference in the nation. The 2019 edition marks the 115
th all-time tournament.
