Josh Simpson Taken By Miami Marlins in MLB Draft

The left-hander is the first Lion to be selected since 2016.

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Columbia baseball senior pitcher Josh Simpson was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 32nd round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday afternoon.

Simpson, the 951st overall pick of the Marlins, is the first Lion to be drafted since Will Savage and George Thanopolous were taken in 2016. Under Brett Boretti's leadership, 10 players have gone on to be selected by MLB teams.

The southpaw earned second team All-Ivy League honors, posting a 4-3 record with a 3.06 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 2019. Simpson became the first Columbia pitcher to toss a complete-game, nine-inning shutout when he did so against Cornell on March 23 and held opponents to a .231 batting average.

A native of Stafford, Connecticut, Simpson saw his numbers improve each season at Columbia. After making nine appearances and eight starts as a first-year, Simpson started 10 games in 2017 and went 4-3 with a 4.02 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 56.0 innings. Simpson, who helped the Lions to a pair of postseason appearances in 2017 (Gehrig Division Playoff) and 2019 (Ivy League Playoff Series) was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week once and was Pitcher of the Week twice during his career.
