PHILADELPHIA — Two second-half goals, scored after the 70th minute, gave Columbia women's soccer (6-3-2, 2-1-0 IVY) a big comeback Ivy League win, 2-1, against Penn (3-2-7, 0-1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Field.
Kat Jordan scored a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to give the Lions the win, and she was joined by
Ania Prussak whose 72nd-minute goal got the Lions on the board. Throughout the game, the Lions continued to attack the Penn net, recording eight shots on goal, while only facing three shots on their own goal.
Paige Nurkin got the start in goal and after the opening 45 minutes Liz Matei took the net to finish out the game.
Sam Cohn led the team with three shots, two of which were on goal and both Jordan and Prussak added a pair of shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening half, the Lions out shot the Quakers five to one, putting four shots on goal but the Penn keeper kept the Lions off the board throughout the period. Jordan got the first Columbia shot on goal with a ball placed into the bottom right, which was kept out by the Quaker in the 24th minute.
Shortly following Jordan's shot, Cohn added her first shot on goal in the 28th minute on a shot that was saved in the bottom left corner. The Lions continued to press the Quakers, not allowing a shot on goal after the 14th minute in the first half, and in the 33rd minute, Prussak sent one into the bottom center that was saved once again by the Penn keeper.
The final shot on goal for the Lions came in the 41st minute, with
Annie Diaz-Silveira sending one into the bottom right which again was saved by the Quaker keeper. Diaz-Silveria's shot was the final action of the opening half as things rolled into the break even at 0-0.
In the 62nd minute, Penn got on the board when Sizzy Lawton scored the first goal of the game.
From there, the Lion comeback was on.
Following a Penn foul, the Lions were in position for a short corner. Prussak took the free kick and curled it up and over the Quaker keeper to squeeze the ball inside the far post to put the Lion on the board at 1-1.
The Lions did not allow a Penn shot on goal following their game-tying goal and in the 79th minute a Penn foul in the box on a ball sent in from the left side gave the Lions a chance to net a go-ahead goal from the spot. Jordan took to the spot and calmly sent the keeper to the left as she sent it right up the middle for the winning Columbia goal.
With a strong defensive showing the rest of the way, the Lions finished off the comeback win for their second Ivy League win of the season and first on the road.
