HOUSTON — Columbia Baseball (5-10, 0-0 IVY) dropped its final game of the weekend, 12-3, to the Houston Cougars (13-7, 0-0 AAC) to wrap up its eight-game, four-city road trip with a Sunday game at Schroeder Park.
Â
Columbia got a pair of scoreless innings from
Will Parkinson and
Griffin Palfrey to wrap up the game, but Houston got to
Billy Black (0-3) early to build an early lead. Finishing with a line of 2.0 IP 5 H 5 ER 2 K, Black could never get settled in as Houston scored three runs in the second and three in the third to go up 6-0 early.
Â
The Lions did get a solid two and two-thirds innings of work from
Derek Yoo, who replaced Black with a pair of Houston runners on in the third, minimizing the damage to just two more runs. Over the next three innings Houston would score six more runs, getting four in the fifth and two in the sixth, before getting shut down over the final two innings.
"The weekend didn't end like we wanted," said head coach
Brett Boretti. "We got beat by a better team today. Houston is a good club. There was a lot positives to take away from the week as well as a lot of things to learn from."
Â
Columbia's scoring came late in the game, and with the Lions already sitting behind the Cougars. A one out walk from
Tyler MacGregor in the sixth, led to him being knocked in by
Hayden Schott and a RBI single from
Anton Lazits scored
Cole Hage, who had singled following MacGregor's walk.
Â
In the seventh,
Weston Eberly led off with a walk an was worked around the bases, eventually being knocked in by MacGregor on a sacrifice fly to left. Eberly's run was the last scored in the game for either side as Houston finished off the 12-3 win to take the weekend series.
Â
GAME NOTES: Lazits and
Joshua Solomon each extended their hitting streaks to six games … Schott has a three-game hitting streak … Columbia went 2-6 over the eight game trip.
