LAST TIME OUT
Columbia played its first home game in nearly three years on Wednesday, hosting Iona at the Columbia Softball Stadium. The Lions took a 1-0 lead on a Maddie Souza RBI single in the fourth, but the Gaels tied it up in the fifth and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh to win the game, 2-1. Both of Iona's runs were unearned.
Jaden Hill went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss. She, Souza, Pagane, Abby Stuart and Lauren Apollaro all collected at least one hit on the day.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Jordan Hill was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the first time on Monday. Hill tossed more than half of Columbia's total innings last week, hurling 14 1/3 to the tune of a 2.93 ERA. The highlight of her week was a complete-game victory on Saturday against Penn, going seven strong while allowing just a run on five hits and a walk, striking out three. The rookie out of San Dimas, California limited opposing batters to a .271 average.
OFFENSIVE LEADERS
Entering the weekend, Abby Stuart (.339) and Bubba Gleaves (.327) each rank top 10 in the Ivy League in batting average. Senior Lauren Apollaro (.306) sits just outside the top 10 in 11th. Gleaves, Stuart and Maria Pagane each rank top 10 in the league in hits. Abby Stuart is top five in the Ivies in homers (3) and RBI (10). Gleaves sits No. 8 in the league in RBI with eight.
THE OPPONENT
Cornell brings a 3-9 mark into the Ivy League opener after going 2-3 this past weekend at the Penn State Tournament, sweeping UMass Lowell and dropping two contests on walk-off runs vs. Rider and the host Nittany Lions.
The pitching staff has kept the Big Red in games so far this season, sporting a 3.97 ERA with seven complete games in 12 starts. Maxine McCraw has a 2-0 record with a 2.84 ERA in 12.1 innings, while both Gabrielle Maday (0-5, 1 save, 3.09 ERA in 31.2 innings) and Mia Burd (1-4, 1 save, 5.37 ERA in 30.0 innings) have thrown at least 30 innings in the circle.
