NEW YORK — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has announced Joe Sheets, EJ Kreutzmann, Cole Hage, JD Ogden, and Griffin Palfrey as the program's captains for the 2024 season.
"I think our players did a great job choosing their captains," Boretti said. "It has been a very productive fall and we are looking forward to getting going again in a few weeks."
Sheets was named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League last season after making all of his scheduled starts and allowing just three home runs (tied for the Ivy League-least). In seven Ivy League starts, he allowed just one home run. The Wilmington, Delaware native walked 19 batters last year, which ranked tied for fourth-least among Ivy League pitchers.
Sheets tossed seven or more innings twice on the season, including April 2 against Cornell in which he struck out a season-high six batters and earned the win. The right-handed hurler was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Kreutzmann appeared in 16 games and made five starts in 2023. He recorded two hits including a home run on March 4 at UNC Wilmington. The San Diego, California native also tied his career-high with three RBIs that day. In 2022, Kreutzmann recorded a .329 average with 26 hits, 25 RBIs, three home runs, and a .427 on-base percentage. He was named Second Team All-Ivy League as a sophomore.
Hage was named First Team All-Ivy League last season for the second straight year. The Fargo, North Dakota native hit .385 in 18 conference games in 2023 and posted the highest on-base percentage (.500) in Ivy League play. Hage also led the Lions in batting average, OPS, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage in league play.
Hage was named Ivy League Player of the Week on April 10 and was also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for the second straight season.
Ogden appeared in nine games on the mound and made four starts in 2023. He recorded 19 strikeouts in 19.2 innings of work. The White Bear Lake, Minnesota native struck out a career-high five batters in a win on March 26 vs. Brown. Ogden tossed two scoreless outings last season.
Palfrey was second on the team in batting average (.356) and RBIs (44) in 2023. The Vancouver, British Columbia native tied for second on the team in hits (62) and ranked in the top ten among Ivy League hitters in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, OPS, hits, RBIs, and doubles. Palfrey was named Ivy League Player of the Week on March 13 for the first time of his career.
Palfrey had the longest hitting streak on the team (17 games) last season and made eight appearances on the mound.
