Lions slated to play four NCAA Tournament teams from last year
NEW YORK — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has announced the program's 2024 schedule, featuring 42 games with 19 of them being played at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
"We put together another very challenging schedule for the team," Boretti said. "This year is a little unique because of all the conference changes. There have been several schedule changes later than usual which ended up allowing us to play an early home weekend against Marist. Ivy League Baseball continues to get better every year and each weekend will be very competitive."
Columbia has had the highest ranked non-conference strength of schedule out of all Ivy League teams the last two seasons according to D1Baseball.com (No. 19 in 2022 and No. 36 in 2023). The Lions earned three wins over ranked opponents in 2023, including two at No. 18 Alabama, who was unbeaten at the time. Columbia also erased a 12-0 deficit against No. 19 UConn and defeated the Huskies, 19-14, in New York last season.
The Lions square off with three opponents who reached the NCAA Regionals last season (Santa Clara, East Carolina, and UConn) along with the College World Series runner-up, Florida. Other strong non-conference opponents include UC Irvine, who finished with an RPI of 45, the highest RPI team not to earn an at-large spot in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
The Lions open the 2024 season with a strong test against Florida, who was one win away from capturing its second National Championship a year ago. Columbia will begin the campaign with a three-game set in Gainesville Feb. 23-25. The two teams will meet for the first time since the 2018 NCAA Tournament Regionals.
Columbia then returns to New York City the following weekend for its home opener against Marist. The Lions and Red Foxes are set to play a four-game series March 1-3 from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. The Lions' 19 home games this season are the most since 2010. Columbia is 25-5 over the last two seasons at home.
The Lions will be going coast-to-coast for spring break in 2024. Columbia begins the eight-game stretch in California on March 8 against UC Irvine in a neutral site contest at Fresno State. The Lions will play four games that weekend, with two against the Anteaters and two against the host, Fresno State. On March 12, Columbia will wrap up its California trip with a midweek game against Santa Clara. The Lions then return to the east coast to face East Carolina in Greenville March 15-17.
Two days later, Columbia is back in action at home against Hofstra on March 19. Ivy League play then commences on March 23 when the Lions welcome Harvard. Columbia hosts another midweek game against Manhattan on March 26 before closing out an eight-game homestand when the reigning Ivy League Champion, Penn, comes to town March 30-31.
On April 2, the Lions make the trek to battle UConn. A few days later, Columbia plays its first Ivy League road series at Dartmouth on April 6-7. The Lions then return home for a midweek tilt with Fordham on April 10 and then a series with Yale on April 13-14. Saturday, April 13 against the Bulldogs will be Columbia Baseball Alumni Day.
Columbia will then embark on its second eight-game road trip of the season when it travels to St. Johns on April 16. The Lions also face Brown (April 20-21), Seton Hall (April 24), and Cornell (April 27-28) on that road swing.
The Lions wrapup Ivy League play on May 4-5 against Princeton at home.
The Ivy League Tournament is set for May 17-19 at the top seed's home field. The winner will advance to the NCAA Regionals on June 2-5. The NCAA Super Regionals are scheduled for June 9-12 with the College World Series slated for June 17-28 in Omaha, Neb.
In 2023, Columbia set the following program records: Team single-season home runs (72), team single-game hits (26) vs. Monmouth, and home runs (7) at Marist. The Lions ranked in the top 25 nationally in batting average (.306), doubles per game (2.38), scoring (8.4 runs per game), and slugging percentage (.517).
Nine opponents from Columbia's 2023 schedule reached the NCAA Tournament regionals (Virginia, UNC Wilmington, Alabama, Troy, Samford, Tulane, UConn, Army West Point, and Penn).
