Lions collect most All-Ivy nods in program history
PRINCETON, N.J. — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti was named Ivy League Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career, and a program-record 12 Lions earned All-Ivy League recognition, the conference announced on Thursday afternoon.
The Lions landed a conference-best six on the All-Ivy League First Team: Starting pitchers Joe Sheets and Thomas Santana, second baseman Griffin Palfrey, shortstop Sam Miller, outfielder Skye Selinsky, and designated hitter Cole Hage.
Third baseman Eric Jeon, outfielder Anton Lazits, and Palfrey garnered Second Team recognition as a utility player. Starting pitcher Derek Yoo, first baseman Jack Cooper, and outfielder Cole Fellows collected Honorable Mention nods.
"I'm really proud of what the team has accomplished this year, and it's great to see so many of our players recognized by the other coaches in the league," Boretti said.
Boretti became Columbia's all-time wins leader earlier this year with a 19-6 victory on April 6 over Dartmouth from Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. The Lions' skipper is sixth all-time in wins amongst Ivy League coaches since the conference was formed in 1956.
With a 26-16 (17-4) mark in 2024, Boretti led Columbia to its 16th Ivy League title and seventh in his tenure in Morningside Heights. Columbia's 17 conference wins tied the program record set in 2022. This year, the Lions have set the single-season program record in home runs, RBIs, runs scored, total bases, and doubles.
FIRST TEAM
Joe Sheets (SP)
The junior captain was a major contributor to Columbia having the second-lowest Ivy League ERA in the conference. Sheets' .207 opponent batting average in league play ranks fourth. Sheets surrendered just one home run to Ivy League hitters, which is tied for a conference-best mark.
Sheets earned three straight victories over Penn, Dartmouth, and Yale earlier this year in which the Wilmington, Delaware, native went more than five innings and allowed one earned run or fewer in each start.
Thomas Santana (SP)
The sophomore was part of a Lions pitching staff that allowed the least amount of hits, second-least number of runs scored, and had the lowest opponent batting average over 21 Ivy League games. Santana's .167 opponent batting average in league play led the conference. The Millburn, New Jersey, native is one of just three pitchers who have allowed single-digit runs and have allowed the least amount of hits in the conference season. Like Sheets, Santana has also surrendered just one home run to Ivy League hitters.
Griffin Palfrey (2B)
The Vancouver, B.C., native and team captain has a team-high .383 batting average, also good for third in the Ivy League. On April 27, Palfrey hit Columbia's 73rd home run of the year and set a new program single-season record that was previously broken last season. Palfrey's 48 RBIs are the second-most in the conference. He's currently riding a 14-game hitting streak and leads the team with 13 multi-RBI games.
The junior also earned Second Team honors as a utility player, making 13 appearances on the mound and pitching to a 2.25 ERA. Palfrey has recorded 20 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched.
Sam Miller (SS)
The sophomore's 57 hits on the year lead the team and rank third among Ivy League hitters. Miller also has the fourth-most home runs (12). The McMurray, Pennsylvania, native drove in a career-high six runs on April 14 vs. Yale.
Through 41 games this year, Miller is slashing .354/.414/.652. Miller checked in at No. 39 on D1 Baseball's Week 12 Top 50 Shortstops List.
Skye Selinsky (OF)
The junior is one of two Lions to start all 42 games this season. Selinsky's 21 doubles on the year has tied the program's single-season record and he is one shy of tying the Ivy League record. The Aliso Viejo, California, native's 44 RBIs rank fourth in the Ivy League and he is a team-best 7-for-7 on stolen bases.
Cole Hage (DH)
The senior captain has now been named to the All-Ivy League First Team for the third straight season. Hage ranks in the top five among Ivy League hitters in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, OPS, runs scored, home runs, and hit by pitches. His double in the second inning of the series finale against Princeton set a new single-season program record as well, giving the Lions 119 on the year.
Hage leads the team in walks (25) and is second on the team in home runs (13). The Fargo, North Dakota, native had a team-high 35-game reached base streak earlier this season and a team-best 15-game hitting streak. Hage is also Columbia's Academic All-Ivy recipient.
SECOND TEAM
Eric Jeon (3B)
The first-year has slashed .329/.398/.541 through 40 games this year with 48 hits (19 for extra bases). Jeon has 90 assists and has turned 12 double plays in the field. The Fullerton, California, native has recorded a pair of four-hit games and three four-RBI performances this year. He was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week twice (April 8 and April 29).
Anton Lazits (OF)
The junior is one of two Lions to start all 42 games this year. Lazits' 53 runs scored are a team-best, and he is three away from tying the single-season program record. The Pittsfield, Massachusetts, native has a .969 fielding percentage this year and has committed just two errors. Lazits has now earned All-Ivy League Second Team recognition for a third straight year.
HONORABLE MENTION
Derek Yoo (SP)
The senior had the fourth-most Ivy League innings thrown this year among conference pitchers (43.1). After starting just one career game ahead of the season, the righty made seven starts in league play and pitched seven innings in four of them. The Los Angeles native allowed one earned run or fewer in five appearances this season.
Jack Cooper (1B)
The senior's 16 home runs this year rank second in the conference and are the most on the team. Cooper's 59 RBIs in 2024 have him three shy of tying the program single-season record and five away from tying the Ivy League single-season mark. The Edwardsville, Illinois, native has six games with five or more runs batted in this season.
Cooper was the first Lion ever to be named NCAA National Player of the Week (March 5), received D1 Baseball Player of the Week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Player of the Week, and was named to Baseball America's NCAA Week 3 Standouts list following a historic series vs. Marist in early March in which he was 9-for-12 (.750 BA) with four home runs and 15 RBIs.
Cole Fellows (OF)
The sophomore smacked all four of his home runs this year in conference play. Fellows slashed .348/.400/.606 over 19 Ivy League games in 2024. The Clovis, California, native drove in a career-high six runs at Brown on April 20. Fellows leads the team with three triples and three sacrifice bunts.
