Carty enters third season on Boretti’s staff
NEW YORK — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has promoted Tom Carty to associate head coach/pitching coach ahead of the 2025 season.
"Tom has been a tremendous coach and mentor to our players since his arrival," Boretti said. "His knowledge of the game is second to none and I am excited we have this opportunity to elevate him to associate head coach."
Carty joined the Columbia baseball staff as the assistant coach/pitching coach in August of 2022. In 2024, the Columbia pitching staff set a new single-season strikeouts record with 360 en route to the program's 16th Ivy League Championship. A program-record 12 Lions earned All-Ivy League recognition and conference-best six garnered First Team. Starting pitchers Joe Sheets and Thomas Santana received First Team honors while starting pitcher Derek Yoo garnered Honorable Mention.
"I am extremely humbled at this promotion and opportunity to continue my coaching career at Columbia," Carty said. "I look forward to the continued work with the best student-athletes in the country, athletic staff and coach Boretti. I appreciate the trust that Brett has put in me, and I look forward to helping him and our staff continue building on the legacy and tradition of the program. It is an honor for me to be here."
Columbia's starting rotation in 2024 consisted of Santana, Sheets, and Yoo. The Lions pitching staff allowed the least amount of hits, second-least number of runs scored, had the lowest opponent batting average, and second-lowest ERA over 21 Ivy League games. Santana's .167 opponent batting average in league play led the conference. Santana was one of just three pitchers who allowed single-digit runs in the conference season. Sheets' .207 opponent batting average in league play ranked fourth.
Sheets earned three straight victories over Penn, Dartmouth, and Yale in 2024 in which the Wilmington, Delaware, native went more than five innings and allowed one earned run or fewer in each start. Yoo had the fourth-most Ivy League innings thrown in 2024 among conference pitchers (43.1). After starting just one career game ahead of the season, the righty made seven starts in league play and pitched seven innings in four of them. Sheets and Santana each surrendered just one home run in Ivy League appearances, tying each other for a conference-best mark.
