The Columbia offense ignited for three goals in the second half
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's soccer team exploded for four goals en route to a 4-0 victory over Providence on Friday night inside Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
Columbia (2-3-3) closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with the impressive shutout victory over Providence (3-4-1). The Lions scored once in the first half before igniting the offense for three goals in the second half Friday night.
Sophia Cavaliere got the scoring started early as she found the net on a penalty kick. Cavaliere fired a shot to the lower right side of the goal that found its way through to put Columbia ahead, 1-0 in the seventh minute. The goal was Cavaliere's first of the season.
Columbia extended its lead to get the second half started in the 58th minute when Charlyse Berry also registered her first goal of the season. Nata Ramirez was credited with the assist as she fed the ball to Berry, who fired it into the net from a few feet out.
The Lions struck again in the 66th minute. This time it was Ramirez who scored on an assist from Sam Cohn. As Cohn was trying to save a ball rolling out of bounds, she made a great pass toward the net. Ramirez jumped up and was able to find the ball and launch a header straight through the top half of the net.
Columbia's scoring surge continued as Angel Akanyirige was the next Lion to score her first goal of the season in the 67th minute. It also marked the first-year's first career goal as a Lion. Akanyirige took a pass from Maia Tabion and was able to slip the ball past the Providence Goalkeeper to put the Lions ahead, 4-0.
The Lions outshout Providence, 18-10 in the win and managed six corners compared to just one for the Friars. Nine Lions registered at least one shot in the game led by Ramirez's team high five shots.
Lauren Rodriguez got the start as the goalkeeper and played over 75 minutes. She tallied six saves to record the shutout. Samantha Mahoney and Isabel Ackerman also joined in on the clean sheet.
