The Lions will look to avoid the sweep in the finale Saturday
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Columbia baseball fell to Yale twice on Friday, dropping the opening game 7-3 before being shut out for the first time this season, 3-0, in the nightcap. The Bulldogs (20-9, 8-3) jumped a game ahead of the Lions (13-16, 7-4) in the Ivy League standings with the twinbill sweep.
The teams will wrap up the series on Saturday, April 12. Game time has been set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
Game 1 Recap
Columbia was held scoreless through eight innings before finally breaking through with three runs in the top of the ninth. Centerfielder Ben Fishel sparked the late rally with a two-run triple.
Shortstop Sam Miller added a three-hit performance, including an RBI single.
Columbia left 10 runners on base and committed three errors in the field, which ultimately proved costly in the decision.
Yale starter Colton Shaw tossed eight shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out five. Joe Sheets took the loss, giving five earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
Game 2 Recap
Despite a clean game defensively with no errors and multiple double plays turned, the Lions couldn't find the clutch hit to challenge the Bulldogs (20-9, 8-3 Ivy), who capitalized on early opportunities to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Lions were stymied by Yale first-year Jack Ohman, who spun a complete game five-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks. The Lions managed just five singles and only had a runner in scoring position twice.
Designated hitter Jack Brewer was a bright spot, collecting two hits. Miller added a single and was part of two double plays defensively, while Griffin Palfrey doubled for Columbia's lone extra-base hit.
Jagger Edwards took the loss on the mound, surrendering three runs over four innings. Alex Sotiropoulos was sharp in relief, allowing just one hit over four scoreless frames to keep the Lions within striking distance.
