LAST TIME OUT
The Lions attempt to comeback from a 6-1 deficit late against Brown came up short. In the bottom of the sixth inning a two-run rally by Columbia saw the Lions bring the tying run to the plate, but that is where the rally ended as the Bears took the game 9-3, clinching the series. Juju O'Brien had a stellar weekend, hitting .444 overall and .500 with runners in scoring position.
17-UP 17-DOWN
In Sunday's game two victory over Brown, starting pitcher Jordan Hill was electric. After surrendering a walk and four hits through an inning and a third, she shut down the Brown offense, retiring 17 batters in a row before giving up a two-out single in the seventh. Hill closed out the game to earn her fifth win of the season and her fourth complete game of the year.
FOLLOWING UP A LOSS
The Lions have been excellent this season getting back into the win column after a defeat. Columbia is 9-5 overall after a loss and have only lost back-to-back games three times this season. Sarah Mikami and Caroline Palys have been the Lions' rock in those contests, with Mikami hitting .459 and Palys hitting .440.
ONE STREAK ENDS ANOTHER KEEPS GOING
In the 2-1 win over Brown on Sunday afternoon, Sarah Mikami saw her season-best 11-game hitting streak end when she went 0-for-1 with a pair of walks. That said, her reached base safely streak is alive and well and now sits at a season-best 15 games. Over the last 15 games she is hitting a team-best .429 (18-for-42) with a .489 on base percentage.
RECORD WATCH
Cami Neal's four home runs this season gives her 18 for her career which is tied for fourth most all-time in Columbia history. She currently shares the No. 4 spot with former Lion Maggie Johnson (2008-11). Fellow senior Maddie Souza has three triples this year, giving her nine for her career which is tied for the program record. One more triple and she will pass former Lion Kacy Krisman (2004-07). The Lions current team batting average of .302 is one point shy of tying the program record for batting average in a season which is .303 set by the 2018 squad.
SCOUTING MANHATTAN
The Jaspers enter Wednesday's contest riding a five-game winning streak. Last weekend, Manhattan swept the Sunday double header to sweep conference foe St. Peter's. On the road this year, the Jaspers are 5-11. Leading the team at the dish is junior utility player Sophia Kiseloski who is hitting .337. She also leads the team with three home runs and 26 runs driven in.
In the circle, the Jaspers sport a staff ERA of 5.11. Their opponents are hitting .300 against them. Karissa Spring leads the team with a 4.31 ERA and a 6-12 record. She has also thrown nine complete games.
THE SERIES
In a series that dates back to the 2000 season, Wednesday will be the 37th meeting between the crosstown foes. All-time, the Lions boast a 19-17 advantage in the series. Last time these teams faced, Columbia got a 5-0 win at home on April 30, 2024.
