Baseball Outlasts Harvard in Extras to Advance to Ivy League Tournament Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. —  The Columbia baseball team moved within one win of an NCAA Tournament berth on Saturday, defeating Harvard 4-1 in 10 innings on day two of the Ivy League Tournament at Yale's George H.W. Bush Field. The Lions (26-17) will play in Sunday's championship round against the winner of Yale and Harvard's noon elimination game.

Pitching dominated most of the game, with Columbia's Thomas Santana delivering a career-best eight-inning, one-run performance with eight strikeouts. Harvard's Truman Pauley countered with a tournament-record 13 strikeouts over nine innings before exiting after 132 pitches.

The Lions opened the scoring in the second inning after an error and a hit-by-pitch set the table for Tate Vogler, who delivered an RBI single to give the Lions an early 1-0 advantage. Harvard quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run by Gio Colasante.

Neither team was able to generate much offense the rest of the way. Columbia stranded a pair of runners in the fourth, and Santana did not allow more than one baserunner in an inning. Harvard's best chance to jump in front came in the ninth after a leadoff single. However, the next batter hit a grounder up the middle that second baseman Jack Kail fielded right at the bag and fired to first for a double play to keep things knotted at 1-1.

In the 10th, a leadoff walk and a failed pickoff attempt put pinch-runner Dean Reynolds in scoring position. Harvard intentionally walked Ivy League Player of the Year Sam Miller, and Griffin Palfrey beat out an infield single to load the bases. Cole Fellows, who finished with a team-high two hits, lined an 0-2 pitch into left field to drive in two runs. A throwing error on the play allowed a third run to score, giving Columbia a 4-1 lead.

Harvard brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th, but Baylor Hicks induced a pop-up to end the game and send the Lions to the tournament final.

Hicks earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, improving to 2-1 on the season.
