Jackson Brewer recorded a career-high four RBI in a 20-6 loss to the Bears
The Lions (0-2) remained within reach through the middle innings, thanks to Brewers' blast in the seventh, before the Bears (5-1) broke the game open with an eight-run rally in the seventh to seal the win.
Brewer paced the Columbia offense, going 2-for-4. Tomas Lopez (0-1) earned the start and took the loss. The junior allowed five runs over three innings with five strikeouts.
In the opening inning, Columbia struck first as senior Cole Fellows delivered an RBI single to bring Ben Fishel home. Mercer responded quickly with back-to-back home runs by Titan Kamaka and a two-run homer by Braydon Kersey in the bottom of the frame to take control.
Columbia chipped away in the fifth inning as Brewer delivered an RBI single to center to score Jimmy Chadwell to make it a 6-2 ballgame.
The Bears answered again with a four-run sixth inning highlighted by Dylan LaPointe's RBI double followed by a Devyn McEachron RBI knock. A throwing error by the Lions allowed another runner to cross the plate, pushing the Bears' advantage to 10-2.
However, Columbia did not go down quietly. Fishel lifted a sacrifice fly to score Tate Vogler before Brewer launched his first homer of the year over the right field wall, to pull the Lions within four.
Mercer stamped the game with 10 unanswered runs in its final two times at-bat. Kersey delivered a two-run double before LaPointe followed with a three-run homer. Kaleb Huffman added another two-run shot as the Bears secured the series against the Lions.
Miguel Hugas (1-0) picked up the win for the Bears after allowing two runs on four hits and added four strikeouts in five innings of work. LaPointe went 2-for-3 and drove in five runs, while Kersey had a 3-for-5 day with four RBI.

The series finale against Mercer is slated to start at noon on Sunday, February 22.
