TAMPA, Fla. — Columbia baseball dropped a pair of contests to USF on Saturday. The Lions fell to 2-9 while the Bulls moved to 17-3.
Game 1
Despite a strong effort on the mound from senior Tomas Lopez, Columbia dropped a tight pitcher's duel to South Florida, 2-0, in the opener.
Lopez delivered another steady outing for the Lions, working six innings and allowing just one run on seven hits while issuing one walk. The right-hander kept the Bulls' lineup in check for much of the game.
USF struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Jacob Green delivered an RBI single through the right side in the second inning, bringing home Lance Trippel to give South Florida its first run of the game.
USF added an insurance run in the seventh inning, again using multiple hits to manufacture the second run of the game. The Bulls continued to apply pressure throughout the night, collecting 11 hits and putting runners on base in several innings, but Columbia's pitching staff limited the damage to just two runs.
Columbia scattered seven hits offensively, led by Cole Fellows, who paced the lineup with three hits.
The Lions attempted to come back when Fellows doubled to right and Ben Fishel followed with a single to put runners at the corners. South Florida escaped the jam with a strikeout and groundout to preserve the shutout.
South Florida starter Michael Senay and reliever Ethan Sutton combined to keep the Lions off the scoreboard in the series opener. Senay worked for 7.1 innings and recorded 6 strikeouts.
Game 2
Columbia's lineup generated traffic on the bases but South Florida used a late surge to defeat the Lions, 10-6, in the nightcap.
The Lions recorded 13 hits, highlighted by home runs from Jack Kail and Anthony Temesvary. Kail led the squad with three hits and two RBI, followed by Jimmy Chadwell, Hunter Snyder, Temesvary, and Vogler each recorded multi-hit performances.
Columbia struck first in the second inning when Temesvary lined an RBI single up the middle, allowing Snyder to score for the early 1-0 lead. After South Florida answered in the bottom half, the Lions reclaimed the lead in the third inning as Jack Kail lifted a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Chadwell, and tied the game at 1-1.
South Florida responded with a three-run third inning to move ahead, 4-1.
In the fourth inning, Vogler launched a solo home run to left field, trimming the deficit. The Lions later pulled even closer in the seventh when Kail delivered an RBI single up the middle, scoring Charlie Slabaugh.
Columbia again found power in the eighth inning, when Temesvary drove a two-run home run to left, plating Snyder and cutting the deficit to two runs.
South Florida broke the game open in the seventh inning, capitalizing on a bases-loaded opportunity that resulted in a three-run triple to swing momentum in the Bulls' favor.
