Lions score 12 runs over the final two innings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Columbia softball erupted for 12 runs across the final two innings, overpowering Brown 12-8 on Sunday in a wild comeback fueled by a six-run seventh and a six-run eighth.

Trailing 4-0 entering the seventh, the Lions flipped the game in a single inning. Sarah Mikami and Kyra Mason opened the frame with singles before Eleni Katsivalis loaded the bases. Caylene Nguyen delivered the hit Columbia desperately needed, ripping a three-run double down the left-field line to cut the deficit to one.

Columbia kept applying pressure. After an error allowed another run to score and tie the game, Alicia Marzouca followed with a two-run double to right-center, giving the Lions a 6-4 lead.

After a lengthy rain delay, Brown (6-13, 1-2 Ivy) answered in the bottom half, as Macy Borowski launched a two-run homer to even the score at 6-6 and force extra innings.

The Lions responded emphatically in the eighth. A series of walks and wild pitches pushed across the go-ahead run before Nguyen reached on an error that plated another. Juju O'Brien then broke it open with a two-run single, and Mikami capped the inning with a two-run triple down the right-field line, extending the lead to 12-6.

Brown managed two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of RBI groundouts, but Charlotte Laidler closed the door to secure the win for the Lions.

Nguyen finished with a game-high three RBIs, while O'Brien and Marzouca each drove in multiple runs during the late surge. Mikami added two RBIs, including the key triple in the eighth. It was her second of the series and seventh of her career.

Nguyen (3-1) earned the win. She entered the seventh for the save but could not close it out. Mads Lawson started the contest but was pulled after an inning and a third of work. Emmy Davis had her best outing of the season, going 4.2 innings in relief, scattering six hits and two runs.

The loss went to reliever Eddie Cobb (2-7). Borowski went 6.1, allowing eight hits, six runs, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Columbia returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Princeton for a three-game Ivy League series. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. first pitch.
