Seven different Lions score in defeat
NEW YORK – The Columbia lacrosse team fell to No. 20/21 Princeton, 18-7, Saturday afternoon at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
With the result, the Lions move to 6-7 on the season and 0-5 in conference play, while the Tigers improve to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play.
Columbia struck early and stayed within reach through much of the opening quarter, trading goals with Princeton to keep the contest competitive. The Lions found the back of the net with 8:19 remaining in the first to tie the game at 1-1, but the Tigers scored the last five goals of the quarter to take a 6-1 lead at the end of the period.
Princeton opened the second quarter with three consecutive goals to build separation, but Columbia responded with three straight scores of its own to close the half. The late surge cut the deficit to 9-4 heading into the break.
The Tigers extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions to push the margin into double digits entering the final frame.
In the fourth, Columbia added late goals, including tallies from Lilah Kirch and Anna Becker in the final frame, but Princeton maintained control to secure the 18-7 victory.
Michelle Zhai led the Lions offensively with three points, while seven Lions scored one goal each, in a balanced offensive effort for Columbia.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Ava Kimche made 12 saves, anchoring the Lions' effort in net. Natalia Raiszadeh led the team with four ground balls, while Maddy Goger, Kimche, and Ali Surace each collected three as Columbia continued to battle throughout the contest.
Following the conclusion of the game, the Lions honored their five seniors in a senior day ceremony. Columbia's five seniors, Riya Batra, Serena Hong, Ali Surace, Cordelia Flemming, and Cecelia Messner, combined for over 165 goals, 75 assists, 220 ground balls, 105 caused turnovers, and 170 draw controls, and appear in the program's top-10 lists for four of those categories. They completed their penultimate game in New York City today, and will play the final road game of their careers next weekend before returning to NYC one last time.
The Lions return to action next Saturday, April 18, when they travel to Dartmouth for another Ivy League matchup. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
