AMHERST, Mass. – The Columbia lacrosse team closed out non-conference play Tuesday afternoon with a 20-9 loss to UMass at Garber Field.
With the result, the Lions move to 6-6 on the season, while the Minutewomen improve to 11-2.
Columbia battled early, matching UMass through much of the opening quarter. Goals from Maddie Brogan, Anna Becker and Michelle Zhai helped the Lions keep pace before Cecelia Messner added a late tally to cut the deficit to 6-4 after the first.
The Lions stayed within striking distance in the second quarter, as Becker and Brogan each found the back of the net. However, UMass added a late goal before halftime to take a 10-6 lead into the break.
UMass created separation in the third quarter, outscoring Columbia 5-1 to extend its lead to 15-7 heading into the fourth.
The Minutewomen continued to build on that momentum in the final period, as the Lions added goals from Becker and Zhai but were unable to close the gap.
Becker and Brogan led Columbia offensively with three goals apiece, while Zhai added two goals and an assist. Messner contributed a goal and two assists, and Emma Row added two assists.
Despite the result, the Lions held a 40-36 advantage in shots and a 20-15 edge in ground balls.
