NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team (14-30, 5-11 Ivy) rounded out its non-conference portion of the 2016 season on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Rider.
Columbia's offense wasted no time as Reilly Metzger led off with a five-pitch walk in the bottom of the first to give the Lions a runner early on. After a ground ball to move Metzger into scoring position, Maddie Gott was able to fire a RBI double down the left-field line to put Columbia on the board first, 1-0.
The Broncs looked as if they were going to attack in the top of the third as they loaded the bases with two outs, but senior Tessa Kroll was able to get a ground out to short to end the inning, stranding the bases loaded to keep it a 1-0 game.
After Kroll was able to retire the side in order to end the top of the fourth, rookie Jordan Townsend was able to battle through an eight-pitch at-bat and blast a solo home run deep down the left-field line, putting the Lions ahead, 2-1.
From there, Kroll (5-15) was able to continue on and hold the Rider offense at bay as she went on to seal the 2-1 complete-game victory, finishing the game with eight strikeouts while allowing only one walk. Megan Ailand (1-15) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Alexandra Yule led the Columbia offense after going 2-for-3 in her first career game at first base while six other Lions were able to combine for hits in the win.
Columbia will return to action on Friday, April 29, as it heads to Penn to take on the Quakers in the first part of a home-and-home with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
