NEW YORK–Led by a career day from goalkeeper Kelsey Gedin, who made 14 saves and a spectacular all-around performance from Lindsey Ewertsen, who tallied four goals, an assist and a game-high nine draw controls, Columbia Lacrosse kept its Ivy League tournament hopes alive with a 14-12 victory over Brown on Saturday at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The Lions stepped up in their return home and defeated the Bears for their third Ivy League win of the season, the most in program history.
In addition to leading the Lions in scoring, Ewertsen set the tone of aggression for with nine draw controls. The junior tallied her 60th of the season, which ties for the program's single-season record set by Caroline Joy '17CC in 2015.
Senior Kelsey Gedin held off Brown with phenomenal performance in goal as she registered a career-high 14 saves. Gedin became just the second goalkeeper in program history to tally more than 500 career saves with a current total of 510.
Columbia's greatest passer of all time, senior Victoria Kalamaras once again had a top-notch performance with a game-high six points on four assists and two goals. Kalamaras connected with first-year Alexandria Absey on both of her two goals for the duo's 16th connection of the year and Absey's team-leading 31st goal.
Garnering another hat trick for the Lions was first-year Chelsea Witteck, who had a standout day with four points on three goals and an assist to sophomore Regan Steed. Orna Madigan fired in a momentum-changing goal with under 11 minutes to play and finished the day with two goals and an assist.
Brown brought a tough fight to the Lions in a game that saw five ties. Columbia kept its poise in both periods as it fended off the Bears' offensive attack and notched its third consecutive home victory.
The Lions improve to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the Ivy League and will return to action on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. in their home finale against No. 20 Princeton. The Lions have an opportunity to secure their first-ever bid to the Ivy League tournament.
