Alexandria Absey, Leah Jones, Ryan Schlageter and Devon Stuzin have been named to lead the 2020-21 Lions lacrosse team
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's lacrosse team has named senior attacker Alexandria Absey, senior defender Leah Jones, senior midfielder Devon Stuzin and junior goalkeeper Ryan Schlageter as its co-captains for the 2020-21 campaign, as voted by their teammates.
"This season's captains are an excellent representation of what it means to be a Columbia Lion," said interim head coach Taylor Pennell. "This group has fully embraced the team's identity of grit. Since the cancellation of the spring 2020 season, these student-athletes have found innovative ways to continue to grow as a team. The captains are leading their teammates through new challenges every day. We are proud to work alongside this year's captains, and we are excited to tackle the hard work ahead of us."
All four are first-time captains for the Lions, but bring a combined wealth of experience to the field in 2021.
Columbia's leading goal scorer in each of the last three seasons, Absey led the Lions with a team-high 15 points behind 13 goals and two assists before the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19. The Ridgewood, New Jersey, product started all seven contests on the year.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Stuzin played in all seven contests in 2020 with six starts. After sitting out her sophomore season due to injury, the midfielder ended the 2020 with eight points behind six goals and two assists.
Despite an abbreviated season, Jones, a Wayland, Massachusetts native, capped 2020 with a career-best four caused turnovers after starting all seven games.
The only junior elected to captain the 2021 squad, Schlageter returns after seeing time in goal in all seven 2020 games, including six starts. The Maplewood, New Jersey native registered 45 saves on the year, including a career-best 15 stops in the season-opener against Army.
