Lions suffer four losses over the weekend
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Columbia softball team wrapped up the UCR/CBU Classic on Sunday. The Lions ended the four-game tournament with four losses, but will get another chance to earn a victory with one final game at Loyola Marymount University on Monday.
The Lions (2-11) opened play on Saturday, falling a close one to St. Mary's, 3-1, before dropping a contest to tournament-host Cal Baptist, 7-3. Columbia played two more on Sunday, suffering a, 5-2, loss to North Dakota and a six-inning, 8-0, loss to CBU.
Senior Lauren Apollaro started three of the four games this weekend and went 3-for-7 (.429) at the plate with an RBI. Fellow senior Abby Stuart went 4-for-10, while sophomore Maddy Rifenberick was 2-for-5 with two doubles.
Pitchers Jordan Hill and Kaia McCaul had the best results in the circle. Hill tossed a 154-pitch complete game in Sunday's 5-2 loss to North Dakota. All five runs came in the top of the second, before Hill shut the Fighting Hawks down the rest of the game. Hill also tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings in Sunday's second game against Cal Baptist and ended the weekend with a 3.00 ERA in 11 2/3 innings. McCaul posted a 3.71 ERA on the weekend, tossing 11 1/3 innings and allowing six earned runs while striking out five.
Columbia and Loyola Marymount go head-to-head on Monday. First pitch from LMU is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. local.
