PHILADELPHIA — The Columbia softball team took the first two games of a three-game, Ivy League-opening series against Penn by scores of 11-8 and 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Penn Park.
Columbia (4-12, 2-0 Ivy) came back from a 6-0 deficit in game one with a seven-run third, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of
Bubba Gleaves and a two-run shot from
Megan Ryono. After Penn (4-15, 0-2 Ivy) tied it up in the fourth,
Dani Mandichak put the Lions right back on top with a two-run homer to center in the fifth.
Maria Pagane drove in two more insurance runs with a double down the third-base line in the seventh.
The Lions picked up where they left off by manufacturing an unearned run in the top of the first of game two. Leading by two in the fifth,
Abby Stuart crushed a no-doubter to center to bump the lead to 3-0, and
Maddie Souza added another in the seventh. The Quakers managed just one run against first-year
Jordan Hill, who took the complete-game victory, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out three.
Columbia hit .349 with a combined 15 runs on 22 hits through the day. Souza was 5-for-8 with the homer and three runs scored, while
Lauren Apollaro and
Bubba Gleaves each had three-hit days. The home runs by Souza, Ryono, Mandichak and Gleaves all accounted for each player's first collegiate long ball.
Hill improved to 2-3 and lowered her season ERA to 3.35. Reyes allowed just two earned runs through five innings in relief of game one, improving to 1-2 on the season and lowering her ERA to 5.44.
The Lions flashed the leather defensively on several occasions on Saturday. Apollaro fired a cannon from right field to throw out a Quaker attempting to go first-to-third in game one. Columbia also turned a double play in the opener and saw
Bubba Gleaves make a diving stop at third and throw out the runner by a half-step. Stuart made a few over-the-shoulder catches behind first base.
Columbia will go for the series sweep on Sunday. First pitch from Penn Park is set for 12:30 p.m. ET.
