Columbia Welcomes In Yale for Weekend Softball Set

Lions host Bulldogs in pivotal home Ivy League series
NEW YORK — The Columbia softball team (7-18, 4-5 Ivy) will look to get back on track this weekend when it hosts Yale (6-16, 4-5 Ivy) for a three-game set at the Columbia Softball Stadium. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Sunday's series finale is also set to begin at 12:30.

LAST TIME OUT
Columbia came out on the wrong end of a three-game sweep at the hands of Harvard last weekend. The Lions never got their offense going, getting outscored 21-2 across the three games and hitting just .169. Meanwhile, Columbia's defense committed six errors, allowing nine unearned runs to cross the plate through the series.
Highlighting the Lions' weekend was first-year Maddie Souza, who hit .571 (4-for-7) with an RBI. Souza drove in the lone run during Sunday's series finale on a bases-loaded single to left to tie the game, 1-1. She and Abby Stuart were named to this week's Ivy League Honor Roll.
IVY LEAGUE STANDINGS
Columbia dropped to fifth in the Ivy League standings following last weekend's losses to Harvard. Despite the 4-5 start, the Lions are right in the thick of it, sitting just two game behind co-leaders Princeton and Harvard (6-3 Ivy).
The top two teams at the end of the regular season will face off in the Ivy League Playoff Series for the right to earn the league's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. Columbia is chasing its first Ivy title and first NCAA berth.
OFFENSIVE LEADERS
Columbia's offense is led by Abby Stuart, who is hitting .372 (29-78) so far this season with a 1.052 OPS. Stuart is second in the league in batting average, fourth in OPS, as well as top five in runs scored (14), hits (29), home runs (6) and slugging percentage (.628). First-year Maddie Souza is hitting .301 and third baseman Bubba Gleaves is just behind at .299.
IN THE CIRCLE
First-year Jordan Hill heads the pitching staff with a 3.24 ERA. Hill is 4-7 on the year with four complete games and one shutout in 67 innings pitched. Raquel Reyes (4.61) and Kaia McCaul (5.29) have combined to toss 86 1/3 innings.
IVY HONORS
Columbia has earned two of the Ivy League's softball Player of the Week honors so far this season. All of Columbia's Ivy accolades this season are listed below.

THE OPPONENT
Yale (6-16, 4-5 Ivy) dropped two of three games last weekend against Brown. The Bulldogs and Bears split Saturday's doubleheader with Yale winning the opener, 4-3, and Brown winning the second game, 4-2. Sunday's rubber game saw the Bulldogs take a 5-0 lead with a five-run first, but Brown answered with a five-run third and went on to score 15 unanswered runs to win it in six innings, 15-5.
Sam Goodcase leads the Ivy League in hitting with a .414 batting average (24-58). Goodcase has scored a team-high 11 runs and also has three home runs, including a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth to give Yale its lone win last weekend against Brown. Maddie Latta is hitting .306 and is the only other Bulldog hitting north of .300. Latta has hit a team-high five home runs and driven in nine.
Latta (3-4) is also a threat in the circle. She leads the pitching staff with a 4.67 ERA, starting five games so far this season and tossing 48.0 innings through 10 appearances. She has struck out 35. Nicole Conway (3-7) has seen the bulk of the work in the circle, entering the series with a 5.34 ERA in 61 2/3 innings pitched. Conway has also struck out 35 but has allowed opposing batters to hit .327 against her so far this season.
Columbia and Yale have played a highly competitive all-time series, which Yale currently leads, 22-19. Columbia took two of three the last time they faced off in 2019 in New Haven. The Lions also won the series the last time the Bulldogs visited New York in 2018.
