Tabion records first collegiate tally in season-opening draw

NEW YORK — First-year forward Maia Tabion recorded her first collegiate goal as Columbia recorded a come-from-behind draw in its season opener against St. John's. Tabion and junior Shira Cohen each capitalized in the second half as the Lions and Red Storm battled to a 2-2 result at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.

St. John's shot out to an early lead as Nicole Gordon lifted a midfield pass from teammate Jessica Garziano over the head of Columbia goalkeeper Paige Nurkin. Moments later the Red Storm looked to double its lead, drawing a penalty kick opportunity off the hand of a Lions' defender. Nurkin, however, would slow St. John's progression, stopping the penalty in its tracks.

With mere seconds left to play in the first half, Garziano produced her second assist of the contest while Brooke Boyd recorded another St. John's goal.

Sunday's matchup proved to be a tale of two halves. Fourteen minutes into the second half, Tabion dodged a pair of Red Storm defenders before besting goalkeeper Gina Muzi to put the Lions on the board.

Fourteen minutes later, Columbia found yet another scoring opportunity, this time off a corner kick. In her return to competition, Ania Prussak provided the service while Cohen knocked the equalizer through the goalkeeper's legs.

Nurkin played 45 minutes in goal for the Lions, recording three saves. Liz Matei between the pipes appeared in the second half, making two saves.

Next up, the Lions hit the road for a 7:00 P.M. tilt at Loyola in Baltimore, Maryland.
