POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Columbia baseball clubbed a program-record seven home runs on Wednesday and crushed Marist, 22-4, in seven innings at McCann Baseball Field.
The Lions (19-13, 8-4) recorded 23 hits in the victory over the Red Foxes (8-27, 3-6), just three shy of the single-game record that was set earlier this year. Six different Lions went yard, including
Andy Blake who had two in the first two innings of the game.
Hayden Schott,
Cole Hage,
Cole Fellows,
Anton Lazits, and
Sam Miller all went deep for Columbia. The previous program-record for home runs in a game was six, set on April 22, 2015 at Fordham.
Blake posted his third four-hit game of the season, recorded his third multi-home run game of the season, and tied his season-high with four runs scored. Columbia scored at least three runs in each of the first five innings.
Mike Decker got the start at third base and smacked a career-high four hits and added two RBIs.
Columbia set the tone in the top of the first, smashing two, two-run homers. Blake homered after a lead-off walk to
Griffin Palfrey to make it 2-0 just two batters in. Schott then reached and Hage blasted a two-run homer to put Columbia in front 4-0. Decker added an RBI single to cap a five-run first inning for the Lions.
The Lions scored three more runs in the second inning, starting with an inside-the-park home run from Blake. Schott would go back-to-back with Blake after hitting a solo rocket off the face of the scoreboard in right field. The Lions plated four more runs in the third, thanks to an RBI single from Eberly and a three-run moonshot from Lazits.
The dominance continued in the fourth, as Columbia added three more runs after four-straight singles. The fifth inning was the Lions' best of the afternoon, as they plated six runs. Columbia blasted two more homers, a solo shot from Miller and a three-run bomb from Fellows, to extend the lead to 19-1.
Thomas Santana started and dealt two scoreless innings with a strikeout to earn his second win of the season. Jafar Vohra came in behind him and pitched two innings, allowing just one run. AJ Valle tossed a scoreless seventh inning. Columbia's staff combined for four strikeouts on the afternoon.
The Lions resume Ivy League play this weekend with a three-game series from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium against the Dartmouth Big Green. First pitch in game one of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 11:30 a.m.
