Lions clobber program-record 65th home run of the season

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Weston Eberly hit two home runs and set the program's single-season home run record as Columbia baseball defeated Army, 11-7, on Tuesday night.

Eberly crushed two no-doubt home runs to left field at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field. The Lions (23-13, 11-4) have won five-straight games and snapped Army's 15-game win streak, handing the Black Knights just their second home loss this season.

"We competed well against a really good Army team," said head coach Brett Boretti. "It was a big comeback win. Our pitchers did a great job attacking the strike zone and we got some great work out of the bullpen. We got contributions from a lot of guys on offense."

This season, Columbia has set the single-season record for home runs and the single-game record for home runs and hits.

Sam Miller recorded a career-high three hits and four RBIs, while Skye Selinsky and Cole Hage each added an RBI. With a double and a walk, Andy Blake has now extended his on-base streak to 36 games.

Army (28-13, 16-2) took a 1-0 lead on a Braden Golinski solo home run off starter Thomas Santana in the home second inning. Columbia answered the next half inning with its first run of the game when Blake doubled and Mike Decker scored. Miller was thrown out at home trying to score from first base on the play.

The Black Knights instantly answered in the bottom of the third with back-to-back home runs. Kevin Dubrule belted a one-out, three-run home run and then Ross Friedrick homered to make it 5-1 Army.

In the fourth inning, Selinsky worked the count full and drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run. Then Miller cleared the bases with a three-run double to tie the game at 5-5.

Columbia added two more runs in the fifth after Eberly smacked a 3-0 pitch over the fence for his eighth home run of the season. The long ball was the team's 64th home run of the season and tied the program's record previously set last year.

Eberly's second home run of the game and ninth of the season came in the ninth inning to set the program record. The Lions tacked on three runs in the inning to push their lead to 11-5.

Army scratched two runs across in the bottom half of the inning and had the bases loaded but Justin Tucker got a ground ball to start a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

The Lions head to Cambridge, Massachusetts for a three-game series with Harvard this weekend. First pitch in game one of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 11:30 a.m. at O'Donnell Field.
