Lions now face elimination; play Princeton on Saturday
The Lions (23-21) face elimination and will play the No. 3 seed Princeton at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Columbia is 19-6 in elimination games since 2013. Penn and second-seeded Harvard will square off in the winner's bracket.
Saturday's game against Princeton will air on ESPN+. Live stats links will be posted on GoColumbiaLions.com and social media. Live in-game updates will be posted to the Columbia baseball team's Twitter account (@CULionsBaseball).
Down 10-2 in the ninth inning, Columbia got the first two runners on. Skye Selinsky singled in Anton Lazits and the Lions had life with no outs. After back-to-back strikeouts, Cole Hage launched his seventh home run of the season. The three-run blast would be all Columbia answered with as the next batter Andy Blake struck out to end the game.
Penn jumped out to a 4-0 in the first inning after putting together four hits in the frame off Lions starting pitcher Joe Sheets. Wyatt Henseler rocketed a two-run home run before Seth Werchan laced a single up the middle to score two more. The Quakers tacked on a run in the home second on a base-hit to take a 5-0 lead.
Columbia got on the board in the fifth inning when Jack Kail grounded into a double play to score Selinsky. The Lions got another run back the following inning after Lazits flared a ball to shortstop that Blake tagged up from third base and sprinted home on to make it 5-2.
A day after being named 2023 Ivy League Player of the Year, Blake extended his on-base streak to all 44 games this season with a single in that sixth inning.
The Quakers responded with back-to-back two run innings in the sixth and seventh to open up a 9-2 lead against Columbia's bullpen. Sheets battled for 5.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and struck out two. After Sheets departed, Brandon Madrigal, Derek Yoo, and Jafar Vohra saw action on the mound.
Griffin Palfrey and Selinsky each recorded a multi-hit game. Vohra tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth inning. Sheets was tagged with the loss.
