Field Hockey Downs Lafayette in Home Opener
9/10/2023 3:37:00 PM | Field Hockey
Lions win 3-2 behind goals from Yu, Gonzalez Lobo, and Abate
Following a 45-minute lightning delay, Columbia (2-2) and Lafayette (1-4) managed just one shot on goal combined in the first quarter. In the second frame, the Lions scored first on Lindsey Yu's third goal of the season with 9:45 remaining until the break. Jeannine Turgeon was credited with the assist.
"It's a relief," Yu said. "We put in so much work in preseason and we took a lot from last weekend and it showed with two wins this weekend."

The Lions took a 3-0 lead when Sophia Abate deflected a Yu pass into the cage. Yu placed a perfect pass on Abate's stick for her to guide it past Lafayette goalkeeper Emma Garvey in what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
"I was ready on that spot and I know I wanted to get my first goal of the season today," Abate said. "My stick was down and ready so I knew I was going to score. I did everything I could to get a touch on it and lifted it right over the goalie."
It was Abate's first goal of the season and Yu's team-leading third assist of the year. Yu leads the team with nine points through the first four games of 2023.

The Leopards responded with two-straight goals later in the third quarter, but Columbia's defense held on and kept a third goal out of the net to secure the win. Josephine van Wijk tallied both goals for Lafayette, including one on a penalty corner as time was expiring in the third quarter.
Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer came up big with nine saves for the second day in a row. Wimmer locked down Lafayette's scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of play, stopping seven Leopards shots. Lafayette outshot Columbia 21-9 (11-7 on goal).
