Canyon Kyle ‘22SPS Promoted to Full Time on the Baseball Coaching Staff

Kyle serves as first base and outfield coach on Boretti’s staff

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has announced the promotion of assistant coach Canyon Kyle '22SPS to a full-time position.

Kyle will enter his second season on Boretti's staff as an assistant in 2024 and will continue to serve as the first base coach. His responsibilities also include working with the outfielders. In 2023, Kyle oversaw two Lions outfielders garner All-Ivy League recognition. Cole Hage was named to the First Team and Hayden Schott was named to the Second Team.

"We are extremely excited and very fortunate to add Canyon as a full-time member to our coaching staff," Boretti said. "We are able to do this because of the support of our Columbia baseball alumni."

The Dallas, Texas native arrived to the Columbia baseball program in September of 2022 as a graduate assistant. In this role, he coached specific positions that are assigned by the head coach, helped at high school prospect camps, threw batting practice, and hit fungoes as well as set up and break down practice. Kyle's duties also included coaching first base and catching bullpen sessions with the pitchers. He received his master's degree from Columbia in Sports Management in 2022.

"This opportunity is a result of the people who took the time to pour their knowledge into me and every time I put on the uniform," Kyle said. "I take pride in representing those who felt I was worth investing in. Coach Boretti, (assistant/pitching coach) Tom (Carty), (former associate head coach Dan) Tisch(ler), (assistant coach) David (Vandercook '15CC), and all the players who exhaust the best out of me every single day. I couldn't be more thankful."

Prior to his arrival in Morningside Heights, Kyle served as a Wake Forest Athletic Development Intern. During his time in Winston Salem, N.C, Kyle contacted donors regarding year-end giving, assisted Division I coaches in finding opportunities to strengthen relationships with the largest donors and stakeholders, and used analytics through the Excel application to prepare weekly reports tracking goals for the office.

"Canyon brings a tremendous amount of energy each day and is very hungry to learn and grow," Boretti added. "I know he has established great relationships with many of our players and the team is very excited to have him as a full-time member of the staff."

Kyle's other experiences in the coaching industry include stops at St. Mark's School of Texas in 2020 and TCU Baseball Camps in the summer of 2019, specifically working with pitchers and catchers. At St. Mark's School of Texas, Kyle was a secondary assistant coach and also helped out on offense.

Kyle received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Performance Leadership in May 2021 from Southern Methodist University - Simmons School of Education and Human Development.
