Baseball Clobbers Dartmouth For Series Opener Win, 19-6

Head coach Brett Boretti becomes program’s all-time wins leader

HANOVER, N.H. — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti became the program's all-time wins leader with Saturday's 19-6 victory over Dartmouth from Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.

It was the 360th win of Boretti's 19-year Columbia career, surpassing Hall of Famer Paul Fernandes for the all-time rank in program history. Boretti is now sixth all-time in wins amongst Ivy League coaches since the conference was formed in 1956.

"It's an accomplishment that I share with every assistant coach and player that I've ever had in this program," Boretti said. "I'm extremely proud to have coached the players that have been in the Columbia uniform for the last 360 wins and look forward to winning a lot more."

The Lions (11-12, 6-1) have now won six-straight games and picked up their first road victory of the season. Starting pitcher Derek Yoo earned his second-straight win and pitched seven innings for the first time in his career. The senior threw an efficient 88 pitches and struck out three. Yoo allowed five runs on six hits.

"It was a great start from Derek," Boretti added. "And we got great production from the whole lineup. Anton Lazits made some great plays in right field today too."

Columbia got off to a quick start with a five-run first inning. Two batters in, Griffin Palfrey cracked an RBI triple to score Cole Hage after he was hit by the game's opening pitch. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Lazits was hit by a pitch to bring in another run. Then Sam Miller contributed a sacrifice fly that scored Skye Selinsky. Columbia produced its next run on a groundout from Cole Fellows.

Eric Jeon also drove in a run in the first inning and it chased Dartmouth starting pitcher Eddie Albert out of the game.

Dartmouth (7-13, 2-5) scratched across its first run of the game in the home second on a solo home run from Nathan Cmeyla to make it 5-1 Lions. Columbia went in front 9-1 after adding four runs in the fourth inning that featured a Palfrey RBI double, Jack Cooper sacrifice fly, and a Lazits RBI triple.

Miles Blackwell blasted his third home run of the year in the fifth inning to push Columbia's lead to 11-3. Cooper put the exclamation mark on the win with a grand slam in an eight-run eighth inning. It was his eighth home run of the season and he leads the Ivy League with 32 RBIs.

Columbia and Dartmouth wrap up the three-game series in Hanover on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
