Lions have nine-game winning streak snapped
NEW YORK — Columbia baseball dropped the series opener to Princeton, 4-2, on Friday afternoon from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
Columbia (24-15, 15-4) had seven hits and didn't scratch across runs until Jack Cooper's two-run blast in the ninth inning. It was Cooper's 15th home run of the year.
Princeton (17-22, 12-7) took an early 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double. The Tigers added three more in the sixth inning on a home run, triple, and single.
Lions starter Derek Yoo went seven innings, allowing all four of Princeton's runs on seven hits. The senior struck out six batters. Brandon Madrigal handled the final two innings, surrendering just one hit.
Columbia battled in the home ninth to break up the shutout. Cooper belted a two-run home run with one out to cut Princeton's lead in half, 4-2. Then with two outs, Sam Miller reached on an infield single and Cole Fellows singled. Jack Kail flew out the next batter later to end the game with runners on first and second base.
The Lions and Tigers close out the series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 11:30 a.m. Between games, Columbia will recognize its senior class.
