Lions will take on the Pioneers at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Kraft Field
NEW YORK - The Columbia lacrosse team looks to make it three wins in a row on Saturday, when the Lions return to New York City to host their home opener. After a three-game road trip to begin the 2025 season, Columbia will take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers at Robert K. Kraft Field on Saturday at 11 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions improved to 2-1 on the year on Tuesday, with a 10-6 victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in Pennsylvania.
The scoring was balanced for the Lions yet again on Tuesday, with six different players scoring a goal. Cecelia Messner led the way for the Lions in both points, with four, and goals, with three. Anna Becker, Maddie Brogan and Dani Falcone each added two goals apiece, and Cordelia Flemming added one. Michelle Zhai chipped in three points in the contest, all on assists.
On the defensive end, it was another strong team effort for the Lions, led by Flemming, who finished the game with a team-high four caused turnovers, as well as adding four ground balls. Ava Kimche was terrific in goal, recording double digit saves again with 13 saves while only allowing six goals. Kimche also had a team-high five ground balls.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
The Pioneers head into Saturday's contest with three games already under their belt, losing all three of them. Most recently, Sacred Heart took on fellow Ivy League opponent Brown, and lost to the Bears 18-2.
Last season, the Pioneers finished 11-6 overall with a 9-1 record in the NEC.
The Pioneers' offense relies on a strong group of returning players: Maggie Araneo, who led the red and white last season in goals, and Shae Insigna, who finished fourth on the team with 26 goals.
Sacred Heart's defense is anchored by returning Northeast Conference Defender of the Year Maci Black, Goalkeeper of the Year Lisa Martin, and All-NEC First and Rookie Team selection Madelyn Breibeil.
