Lions fall to 4-2 in Ivy League play

CAMBRDIGE, Mass – The Columbia softball team resumed its series against host Harvard, falling to the Crimson 4-1 in game one. In the finale of the series, the Lions offense went cold, falling Harvard, 12-0, in five innings at Soldiers Field.

The Lions (10-12, 4-2 Ivy) hit just .214 as a team on Saturday going 9-for-42. Eleni Katsivalis, Sarah Mikami, and Payton Shimansky all collected a pair of hits. Mikami wrapped up her weekend hitting .444 overall (4-for-9) with two runs scored, she clubbed a triple today to complete the cycle for the series.

Harvard (13-8, 2-4 Ivy) was led by Sophie Sun who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four driven in. Finley Payne, Alexa Muller, and Maya Douglas all had multiple RBIs in the nightcap for the Crimson.

GAME ONE RECAP
The second game of the series was halted Friday evening with the score 4-1 in favor of Harvard. That is how it finished when the two sides completed the game on Saturday afternoon.

After tossing a scoreless first and second inning, the Crimson finally broke through against Columbia starter Jordan Hill (3-5). A leadoff walk and a wild pitch would haunt Hill, as Harvard scored two runs without the ball leaving the infield.

In the top of the fourth, the Lions cut the deficit in half. Cori Neal started the rally with a single through the right side and scored on the triple to right field by Mikami.

In the top of the fourth, Harvard added two more runs. A single, a walk and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with one out for Alexa Muller who singled up the middle to score a pair.

That was more than enough run support for Crimson starter Nicolette Hunter (6-1). Hunter went the distance scattering five hits, and a run, while walking two and striking out six.

Hill took the loss, she went 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, four runs, with three walks and two strikeouts. Lily McCord pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the series finale, the Crimson took control with a four run second and a five run third. Harvard put the finishing touches on the day with three more runs in the fourth.

Hunter once again got the win, going 5.0 complete, scattering four hits, no runs with three strikeouts. For the Lions, Emmy Davis (4-3) took the loss, she went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with three walks and a strikeout.

UP NEXT
Columbia will stay on the road, traveling to New Haven, Conn., for a three-game series against Yale starting Saturday, April 5. The twin billing is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. with game two slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
