NEW YORK - The Columbia lacrosse team looks to bounce back on Wednesday afternoon, as the Lions will welcome the Marist Red Foxes to New York City for a non-conference clash. The Lions will take on the Red Foxes at 4 p.m. at Robert K. Kraft Field in the final game before Ivy League play begins.
LAST TIME OUT
Columbia went to battle against the Sacred Heart Pioneers in the team's home opener at Kraft Field on Saturday afternoon, but it was the Pioneers who came from behind to stun the Lions late, 11-10, in a game that came down to the very last second.
After Columbia took a 6-3 halftime lead, Sacred Heart battled back to take control of the game. The Pioneers scored a goal with just 50 seconds left to to take a two goal lead, but Anna Becker scored her second goal of the game with 12 seconds left to make it a one goal contest. However, Sacred Heart won the final draw and was able to run out the clock.
Dani Faclone led the way for the Lions' offense with three goals. Cecelia Messner, Becker, and Ellie Taylor each added two goals of their own, and Cordelia Flemming had one to round out the 10 Columbia scores in the contest. Michelle Zhai added three assists for the second consecutive game.
On the defensive end, Messner, Taylor and Ali Surace were tied for the team lead in ground balls, with three apiece. Flemming and Julie Griswold each had two caused turnovers. Ava Kimche gave up eight goals while making eight saves.
SCOUTING MARIST
The Red Foxes head into Wednesday's contest with a 1-5 record. Most recently, Marist lost to Binghamton 8-7.
In terms of common opponents, Marist lost 9-5 to Monmouth at home, who Columbia beat on the road earlier this season 11-8.
Last season, the Red Foxes finished 3-13 overall with a 2-7 record in the MAAC. Their lone non-conference win did come at the Linos' expense, as they defeated Columbia 13-12 in Poughkeepsie. Assistant Coach Tierney Larson will look to defeat her former team, as well as earn some revenge from last season.
