Maddie Brogan collects hat trick in loss
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia lacrosse team took on #5 Princeton on Saturday evening in an Ivy League contest at Sherrerd Field. It was the Tigers coming away with a 17-6 win to improve to 11-1 (4-0 Ivy), while the Lions dropped to 4-8 (0-4 Ivy).
Maddie Brogan led the Lions' attack, notching her second career hat trick. However, it was Cecelia Messner who got Columbia on the board in the first quarter with a strike to the back of the net which gave the Lions the first lead of the game.
After the Tigers tied it up at 1-1 Messner then found Brogan with a beautiful pass to help net her first goal of the game. Princeton once again had an answer, and the game went into the second quarter tied 2-2.
From that point it was all Tigers. Princeton outscored the Lions, 6-1, in the second quarter to gain a five-goal lead at the break.
That run extended to 10-1 after four Tiger goals to begin the third quarter, and the Lions were unable to halt Princeton's momentum the rest of the way.
Despite the three goals from Brogan, the Tigers won 17-6.
Aside from Brogan's three goals, Messner, Noelle DeMarinis, and Ellie Taylor each found the back of the net once. Messner added two assists for three total points. Dani Falcone had a team-high four draw controls and three ground balls.
Next up, the Lions will host Senior Day against Dartmouth on Saturday, April 19 at Commisso Soccer Stadium.
