Offense Goes Quiet as Softball Falls to Princeton in Series Opener

Lions shut out for just the second time this season

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia softball team could not get it going offensively as host Princeton defeated the Lions, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at Cynthia Lynn Paul Field.

It is just the second time this season that Columbia (15-16, 7-6 Ivy) has been shutout. Offensively, the Lions were held to just four hits on the day. Princeton (18-13, 12-1 Ivy) scored four runs on seven hits and was carried by the strong pitching performance of starter Brielle Wright (7-4) who tossed a four-hit complete game shutout.

Lion's starting pitcher Jordan Hill (5-7) battled in her six innings of work. Walks played a huge role in her outing, surrendering six on the day. She allowed four runs, on six hits. Hill also struck out three. Outside of a three-run top of the first, Hill did an excellent job of limiting the damage, keeping the Tigers mostly in check.

A dramatic first inning proved to be the difference in the series opener. The Lions had their best chance to score, getting two aboard before Sarah Mikami was thrown out at third to end the threat.

In the home half, two walks and a one out single loaded the bases for Allie Goodwin who slapped a single to right field that knocked in a pair. The Tigers added a third run on a single by Braeden Hale.

Payton Shimansky, Juju O'Brien, Caroline Palys, and Cami Neal all reached twice for Columbia. All four recorded a single and reached either via a walk or being hit by a pitch.

Caylene Nguyen pitched a clean bottom of the sixth.

UP NEXT
Columbia looks to get back into the series tomorrow afternoon. Game one of Saturday's double header is slated for a 12:30 p.m. first pitch. Game two is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
