The Lions will face the Patriot League Champs in a final tuneup before NCAA Regionals
NEW YORK — The Columbia baseball team will host Holy Cross for a doubleheader this Saturday, May 24. Game one is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, followed by the second game approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
GoColumbiaLions.com will have an audio stream of the game featuring Ryan Young '15CC on the call. Fans can also follow along with live stats or follow the baseball program's social media accounts for updates.
Both teams are coming off conference tournament championship runs and will use the games as a final tuneup before learning their NCAA Tournament destinations on Memorial Day.
The Lions (27-17) ran the table at the Ivy League Tournament in New Haven to secure their NCAA Regional berth. After knocking off Penn and Harvard in dramatic extra-inning victories to open the Ivy Tourney, Columbia slugged seven homers in a 14-6 win over the Crimson to clinch its eighth NCAA appearance and sixth in the last 13 years. The Lions come into the weekend winners of seven straight and 14 of their previous 15 contests.
Anton Lazits was named the Ivy League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after delivering a walk-off hit in the 10th inning of the opener against Penn and belting a pair of homers in the clincher over the Crimson on Sunday.
Columbia boasts one of the top offenses in the country, averaging 8.7 runs per game (No. 19 in the NCAA) and 2.43 doubles per contest (No. 11 in the NCAA). The Lions are also among the national leaders in double plays, checking in at No. 23 with 0.86 turned per game. Additionally, Columbia's pitching has come together at the perfect time, holding opponents to three runs or fewer in seven of its last 10 games.
Like the Lions, the Crusaders (31-23) earned the Patriot League regular season and conference tournament crowns to punch their NCAA ticket. Holy Cross took 2-of-3 against Lehigh in the semifinal round and sealed a sweep of Army in the championship series with a walk-off double in the 10th inning.
Columbia is 9-22 all-time against Holy Cross, but the schools have not met since 2012 when the Lions swept a doubleheader in Worcester.
Chris Baillagreon leads Holy Cross with a .381 batting average, 17 doubles and 50 RBI. John LaFleur has added seven dingers and 47 RBI in 40 games. On the hill, Danny Macchiarola and Jaden Wywoda have been at the top of the Crusaders' rotation. Macchiarola has a 9-4 mark with a 3.09 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 87.1 innings. Wywoda is 9-2 with a 3.62 ERA and 76 punchouts in 77.0 innings.
