Columbia Baseball Splits Doubleheader against Harvard in Home, Ivy Debut

Sotoropoulos fans nine in opener; Brewer, Temesvary power Columbia to 5-3 win in nightcap
NEW YORK — Columbia baseball rebounded from a game one loss to earn a 5-3 victory and secure a doubleheader split with Harvard in its home and Ivy League opener Saturday at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. The Crimson (2-13, 1-1) took the opener, 4-1.
Game 1
Alex Sotiropoulos (1-2) turned in a strong outing, tossing 6.1 innings with nine strikeouts. He allowed three unearned runs on seven hits.
Harvard opened the scoring in the third inning, capitalizing on a throwing error. The Crimson added two more runs on another defensive miscue to take a 3-0 lead.
Columbia (3-12, 1-1) cut into the deficit in the sixth. Jackson Brewer lined an RBI single to center, scoring Tate Vogler to make it 3-1.
Harvard responded in the seventh on an RBI single by Gio Colasante to extend the lead to 4-1. Reliever Brett Gable closed out the game with three scoreless innings to earn the save.
Baylor Hicks and Ray Huke combined for 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run.
Colasante (1-4) earned the win after six innings, allowing two hits. Gable picked up his first save of the season.
Game 2
Columbia jumped out to an early lead, then answered after Harvard tied the game, scoring twice in the sixth to secure a 5-3 win.
Anthony Temesvary led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three extra-base hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Lions struck in the first inning. Brewer launched a two-run homer to right field, scoring Jimmy Chadwell for a 2-0 lead.
Columbia added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Jack Kail, bringing home Temesvary.
Harvard got on the board in the fourth on an RBI double by Max Lane. Colasante followed with a two-run homer in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
Temesvary sparked the go-ahead rally in the sixth with a triple, scoring Vogler. Chadwell followed with an RBI double to give Columbia a two-run cushion.
Will Harrigan (1-0) earned the win with five innings of relief. Payton Soske tossed 2.1 hitless innings with three strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
